Do you know what accounts for the highest number of aviation fatalities worldwide?
Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I).
As a pilot, you can be faced with an infinite amount of situations in the cockpit. Therefore, it’s crucial to have the skills and knowledge required to not only recognize but also correct any dangerous event. These dangerous events can range anywhere from environmental factors (clear air turbulence, thunderstorms, icing) to mechanical issues (faulty automation, system failures, autopilot-pilot interaction) and even human errors (monitoring and feedback, crew resource management, mode confusion).
LOC-I most commonly happens when a pilot cannot recognize and correct these potentially dangerous situations, and in turn, causes the aircraft to enter an unstable condition. What gets even more threatening is that oftentimes these incidents are comprised of multiple unexpected and unusual events happening simultaneously. This happened during the 2009 Air France Flight 447 when three experienced Airbus A330 pilots were operating at too high an angle of attack to sustain flight and couldn’t recognize, and in turn, remedy the situation quickly enough to recover.
These types of unexpected situations require rapid interpretation and response. The Airplane Upset Prevention and Recovery Training Course (AUPRT) is designed to help you understand, identify, avoid, and recover from LOC-I safely and promptly.
This course covers airplane undesirable aircraft states (UAS) and Loss of Control Inflight (LOCI) / aircraft upset focusing on aerodynamics and flight dynamics, recognition, prevention, and recovery techniques.
The course includes relevant high-altitude aerodynamics, including aircraft performance factors. Factors leading to UAS, and Upset including environmental, aircraft-related, and pilot-induced factors are covered. Recommendations for recovery from UAS / LOCI are also discussed.
Module 1: Fundamentals
Module 2: Causes of Airplane Upset
Module 3: Airplane Upset Avoidance Strategies
Module 4: Recovery Techniques
The course length is 2-3 hours. Each module has exam-generated system banked questions as well as reference material. Regulatory compliance with ICAO / EASA / FAA / Transport Canada and maintains compliance with IOSA standards.
